Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative disease that starts slowly and progressively worsens over time. It’s the cause of 60-70% of cases of dementia. As the disease advances, it can include problems with speech, awareness, short-term memory loss and behaviour.
In Ireland there is only one charitable service for this disease, The Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland, founded in 1982. They offer over 120 dementia specific services as outlined in the list below.
